Wild Weather no Deterrent to Wigginton Gardeners!

Wigg Spring Flower Show 16 1Despite the unseasonable cold and wind and rain earlier this Spring, the Wigginton Gardeners Association managed to put on an excellent Spring Show last month.

It has to be admitted that the tulips were too late this year to be shown in any numbers, but the daffodils certainly seemed to thrive.

Perhaps we should not be too surprised at this, since daffodils are a flower normally associated with Wales and the upland North West - so they must have some in-bred resistance to more boisterous weather.

The proof of this is in the picture (left) of the prize winning "Bowl of Daffodils" exhibited by Rosemarie Hollinghurst.She went on to win another First Prize for a Double Bloom Narcissus, Second Prize for a Trumpet Narcissus and a Third Prize for a Small Cup Narcissus.

Maybe the relatively exposed siting of her garden in Tinkers Lane, on the edge of the western ridge of the Bourne Valley, stimulates her daffodils to try harder.

Why don't you have a go and enter next year? Wigg Spring Flower Show 16 2

As you can see from the second picture the Wigginton Gardeners Association Shows are not only taken seriously (but not too much!), but are also well-attended and friendly social occasions.

What you don't see here is the small dining room and kitchen where you can enjoy Scones, Jam and Cream, the usual tea and coffee and excellent cakes baked by the skilled ladies of the village. The shows are held in the Village Hall on Chesham Road near the ever-popular Greyhound and this year again thanks are due to Association Chairman Roger Wyborn and his hardworking committee.

Still to come this year are:
a Coach Outing to Abbots Ripton Hall Garden Show (near Huntingdon) on 25th June;
the Annual Show (10th September);
two talks in the Village Hall (13th October and 7th November) and
a Social Night in the Hall on Friday, 2nd December.
