Leavers were fond of telling us that we are the fifth largest economy in the world. Indeed, but did they look at the size of the first three?

The first two are giants, and would drive two very one-sided hard bargains with us. But, hey, leaving the EU will give us a chance to do more business with the so-called BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China. Well, the last one is China again - one of those tough talking giants we just mentioned. The others are actually not really as large as you might think - and they all have economic problems of their own.

Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst has welcomed the county council's letter to new Rail Minister Paul Maynard MP calling on him to get a grip on the appalling rail services offered to Hertfordshire commuters by Govia Thameslink on the St Albans and Welwyn-Stevenage routes.

"This letter was prompted by LibDem questions at County Hall," Stephen said. "Enough must be enough for our hard-pressed commuters. And the same company's disastrous performance on its Southern franchise leading to huge cuts in scheduled services has had a knock-on effect for Watford through to Tring as well."

LibDem transport spokesperson Sandy Walkington added, "Govia needs to go figure what running a passenger railway is about, or it's time for the Government to step in and remove the franchise."

We have been pressing HS2 for some time to have an open day event here to inform local residents about the plans, etc. Although the main impact of the construction will be on West Hyde and Maple Cross the whole Rickmansworth area will be significantly affected. HS2 has decided to hold the event in the middle of August. When TRDC pointed out that holiday time would rule out a large number of people HS2 agreed to hold a second day in September. The dates are Thursday 11th August 2.00-8.00pm, and Saturday 17th September 11.00am-3.00pm at Maple Cross Community Centre, on the corner of Hornhill / Longcroft Rds. This an opportunity to find out more about the project, talk to experts about the environmental impact, engineering, construction, property, etc, to see maps and plans and ask questions. Do Come Along.

Unity broke out at the most recent County Council meeting as a Lib Dem motion condemning racist attacks and hate crime was seconded by the Conservatives and Labour spoke strongly in favour.

Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst called on the council to publicly condemn all acts of racism and hatred and to ensure that local bodies and programmes have the support and resources to tackle the issue. The motion received unanimous support.

The Conservatives seconded the motion and the Labour Group Leader spoke in support of it. All county councillors present voted in favour of it.

Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst said, "I am proud that here in Hertfordshire and the UK we live in a diverse and tolerant society in which racism, xenophobia and hate crimes have no place.

"We wanted to reassure all people living in Hertfordshire that they are valued members of our community, irrespective of their beliefs, nationality or ethnic origins, or gender. They all make a great contribution to this diverse and vibrant area and they are very welcome here.

"We also wanted to make clear that should there be any acts of this nature, they should be reported and the Police Commissioner has assured residents that any reports will be taken very seriously and acted upon.

"Any of us who sees or witnesses any example of intolerant attitudes has a duty to say it's unacceptable in this day and age and will not be tolerated," Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst concluded.

The Liberal Democrats at Tuesday's County Council meeting called for the Conservative administration to think again about its proposals to cut support for people with homelessness problems.

The Conservatives are now moving fast to take control of what may remain of the UK.

Now they've cowbarred us out of Europe, a whole raft of human rights legislation will no longer be available to protect people from government excess - and that includes their take-over of our schools.

It was only last October that David Cameron announced he wanted "every school to become an Academy" - in other words, to be cut loose from local councils and democratic oversight, and controlled directly by the Department for Education. Then in March, the Conservative Government announced this would indeed be national policy.
