  • Beggars Lane Off-Road Parking WIP
    Article: Dec 6, 2016

Beggars Lane near Tring Station is having to be closed for a series of works to enhance safety for motorists, cyclists and people using the Ridgeway Path or fishing or walking along the canal.

Apologies for the inconvenience this is causing while the lane is closed. There will be quite a lot of work to be done, but this will be done in stages.

The road has been badly damaged over several areas by vehicles pulling off over the edge of the tarmac width to pass each other. This causes the tyres and the weight of the vehicles to nibble away at the edge of the carriageway and then the wheels wear away the verge to produce long holes into which wheels of following vehicles can sink and this can then result in tyres being shredded.

To a lesser extent the same process occurs more slowly when parking takes place day after day in narrower stretches of the lane..

So the County Council is carrying out the following work in stages:

    • Carriageway repairs
    • Construction of 6 additional off-road spaces (or more if Smart Cars are being parked)
    • Tree and hedge trimming and a wider entrance created onto Station Road
    • New kerb stones to protect the edge of the road
    • Improvement to drainage and a length of ditch cleared out

The propose to make Beggars Lane a Clearway has been abandonned and parking restrictions will be enforced using Double Yellow Lines instead.

There are three possible future projects which are being considered for the area.

    • Improvements to Northfield Road
    • Extra buses between Tring and the Stations in the evenings
    • Speed restrictions down Beggars Lane - at present it is an unrestricted road (i.e. max speed of 60 mph)

    Article: Dec 3, 2016

Plans by Conservative controlled Hertfordshire County Council to cut 608 roads, including 57 that served primary or infant schools from its winter gritting routes in event of snow or very cold nights being forecast, have been postponed till next year.

These cuts had been voted through, against Liberal Democrat opposition. Lib Dem Cllr Tim Williams (second from right) delivered a petition from 662 residents signatures against these cuts and forced a new debate on the subject at the County Council's December Highways Panel

    In an unusual Parliamentary by-election
    • where the sitting Tory MP resigned to fight as an independent,
    • where the Tories (wisely) did not dare to stand against their rebel,
    • where UKIP failed to stand at all but the man who bankrolls them supported the maverick ex-Tory candidate,
    • where the Labour Party was eclipsed and lost its deposit,
    • where the Greens strategically supported the Liberal Democrats,
the result was a classic barnstorming victory for the Liberal Democrats.

If there's one thing that all 77 of Hertfordshire's county councillors all agree on, it's this - that they spend to much time coping with highway problems.

County Councillors have many other responsibilities:- Social Services, Public Health,Childrens Services, Special Educational Needs Support, Adult Care, Waste Disposal, Libraries and the Fire & Rescue Service. They also have a number of specialised planning responsibilities in connections for such things as:- Transport, Flood Management, Environment Issues, Health & Wellbeing and Disaster Recovery.

From LibDem Leader, Tim Farron ... This is a Government that is just about managing. The official figures have revealed a £220 billion Brexit black hole- hundreds of billions taken out of our economy when we need it most. Given how bad the outlook is, it's no wonder the Chancellor doesn't want to have to do another Autumn Statement.

European research shows that CO2 emissions from vehicles can de reduced by around five per cent by improved maintenance and design to make the surfaces smoother. The research was carried out by members of FEHRL (Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories).

The findings show that the condition of the road surface directly affects vehicle fuel consumption. If the surface is in poor repair, fuel energy will be wasted. This is because the so-called 'Rolling Losses' are higher. Energy is absorbed by suspensions systems in smoothing out the shocks from uneveness, joints, rutting and potholes. In addition energy is absorbed by the tyres in the increased flexing that will occur at the tyre/road interface.

There were 9 council by elections this week, but only one change - a Conservative gain from Labour in Pendle's Reedley Ward high in the Pennines near Nelson. With Labour and the Conservatives fairly evenly matched it only needed a small swing for the seat to change hands. The election was hard fought with a high turnout and with UKIP failing to stand once again it was not surprising that the Conservatives got the modest boost they needed.
