In the General Election on June 8th, in which the Liberal Democrats saw their parliamentary representation go up from 8 seats to 12 - a 50% increase - Christopher Townsend and the Lib Dem team achieved a respectable result.

The vote share increased by 1.4% as, against expectations, the Liberal Democrats comfortably saved their deposit and gained ground across the constituency.

Nick Hollinghurst, recently re-elected as the Lib Dem County Councillor for Tring & the Villages commented, "This progress, modest though it is, when taken together with the rest of the local county council results shows that the Liberal Democrats are well placed to make gains on Dacorum Borough Council in the elections in two years time."

"There are only three serious contenders in this constituency and in the absence of any effective opposition from Labour it is the Liberal Democrats who will be holding the Conservatives to account both locally and nationally."

Phil Williams, candidate in the Three Rivers by-election in Chorleywood South and Maple Cross on Thursday, 13th July, added, "It's important to keep up the momentum. This by-election is to replace Ann Shaw who so sadly died some months ago. It is an honour to be asked to stand in this by-election to represent Chorleywood and Maple Cross and, if the electors so decide, to follow in her footsteps.

There are regular elections in Three Rivers next year and the increase in the LIb Dem vote share in the recent difficult general election gives us encouragement for this year and next."

  • GDP Increases - Oxford Economics (Oxford Economics)
    Article: Jun 7, 2017
The Economist, the prestigious business affairs weekly with a global circulation and high reputation among businessmen in every country, has endorsed the Liberal Democrats in the UK General Election.
    They wrote,
"No party passes with flying colours. But the closest is the Liberal Democrats. Brexit is the main task of the next government and they want membership of the Single Market and Free Movement .
They are more honest than the Tories about the need to raise taxes for public services - and they are more sensible than Labour, spreading the burden rather than leaning only on high-earners. Unlike Labour they would reverse the Tories' most regressive welfare cuts. They are on the right side of other issues: devolution of power away from London, reform of the voting system and of the House of Lords."
"Against a backward-looking Labour Party and an inward-looking Tory party about to compound its historic mistake over Brexit, They get our vote"
Consider a vote for the Liberal Democrats as a down-payment for the future."
The Liberal Democrats' costed policy proposals have been judged by the Institute of Fiscal Studies as fairer and more practical than either the Tory or the Labour Party plans.
Oxford Economics have calculated that the Liberal Democrat policies produce a better increase in GDP by 2021 than the other parties' proposals.
And Bob Geldof also backs the Liberal Democrats.
Vote Liberal Democrat and you'll be in good company!
  • Bovingdon Chesham Rd/Green Lane Junction
    Article: Jun 4, 2017

Mike Chapman discusses Bovingdon's roads with Lib Dem county councillor Nick Hollinghurst.

Yes, we know road maintenance is expensive and difficult.

However the situation has developed that there are now very few companies involved as main contractors.

This means there is not much market competition.

Herts County Council really must develop a more imaginative and robust approach to the contractor supervision and contract management.

  • Anne Shaw OBE
    Article: Jun 3, 2017

Yesterday I attended Ann Shaw's Memorial Service which filled St Marys Church, Rickmansworth with many friends and colleagues. I had known Ann for 30 years. I valued her as a friend, appreciated her as a colleague and admired her as an effective community politician. I shall miss her very greatly.

Ann will have many "memorials" both physically and in our memories but one which was mentioned three times during the service was her commitment to children and the first-class playgrounds that were installed across Three Rivers under her leadership.

After the service I happened to drive past one of these, filled with happy, noisy, excited and lively children watched by caring parents.

Who could ask for a better memorial than that?

Goodbye, Ann. I was privileged to have known and worked with you.

This is what her friends and colleagues colleagues on Three Rivers District Council wrote,

"We are still recovering from the sudden loss of Cllr Ann Shaw OBE.

Cllr Martin Trevett and Ann shared the Three Rivers District Council seat of Chorleywood South and Maple Cross.

Cllr Trevett said Ann was a special kind of person,

'I had known her for about 40 years and we had served together on Three Rivers for over 30 years, during which time she was leader of the Liberal Democrat group and Leader of the Council.

Ann was the sort of person that would not take no for an answer. If she could not get something done she would do it herself, always the champion of old, young and disadvantaged.

With Ann on your side you felt that nothing was impossible.

The world will be a poorer place now she is not with us.'"

  • Christopher Townsend at New Surgery
    Article: May 31, 2017

Christopher Townsend, the Liberal Democrat candidate for South West Hertfordshire has called for greater clarity on the funding arrangements for the New Surgery in Tring.

Since the retirement of the GP from this single-doctor practice over a year ago NHS England, which issues the contracts to GP practices, providing services to patients under a 12-month "caretaker contract" with Herts Urgent Care. Now the twelve months are up - with no clear arrangements yet in place.

  • Zero out of Nine
    Article: May 29, 2017

The Liberal Democrat Candidate in the Bovingdon By-Election, Mike Chapman says, "Conservative complacency is letting us down"

Yes, a Tory DBC councillor scored Zero out of Nine for attendance!

That was the record of the Conservative Councillor who resigned to cause the By-Election in Bovingdon, Flaunden & Chipperfield. The By-Election is on June 8th, the same day as the General Election.

From Jan 1st to May 11th, out of 9 possible attendances at council meetings and committees he did not attend even one!
And it wasn't something new, either. Since 8th June last year there were 18 possible attendances and he showed up just 3 times.

Now there can be many reasons for situations like this to arise - moving away or illness for example.

However, there was plenty of time to put it right. And it was the Conservatives' responsibility to sort it out and ensure that the people of Bovingdon, Flaunden and Chipperfield had a full complement of councillors to represent them.

The fact is that the Conservatives take you for granted. They just couldn't be bothered to do their duty until forced into it by the reality of the calendar and the risk of an automatic disqualification.

Mike says, "Don't reward Conservative complacency by supporting them again."

Vote for Mike Chapman and help the Liberal Democrats to make things better in our Borough!
