Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for South West Hertfordshire, Christopher Townsend gave a good performance at his first hustings meeting, which was held yesterday evening at St Joan of Arc School, Rickmansworth.
Reflecting on the meeting today, Christopher said: "It was great to finally get my party's policies across to a large group - I felt they were received well by the 120 people who attended the hustings."
Christopher appeared alongside candidates from the Conservative Party, Labour and UKIP. He opened with a speech that set out the Lib Dems' four key policy commitments:
There was then an opportunity for Christopher to answer questions from the audience on the BNP, equality leglislation, NHS expenditure, fuel taxes, education, defence spending, housing developments in Three Rivers, poverty and climate change.
The biggest round of applause came when Christopher criticised the decision of Hertfordshire County Council to close down a number of schools in Three Rivers over the past couple of decades. He expressed his support for the WD3 Parents Action Group, who have been campaigning for a new school in the Rickmansworth area.
Conservative MP David Gauke gave an assured performance but did not answer Christopher's criticism of the Conservative's healthcare spending plan - nor did he concede that the closure of schools around Three Rivers was the fault of the Conservative-run county council.
The next hustings meeting will be held this evening at Northchurch Baptist Church and is due to start at 7.45pm (doors open at 7.30pm).
