Baroness Falkner
South West Hertfordshire Liberal Democrats were delighted to receive Baroness Kishwer Falkner as guest speaker at their AGM in Rickmansworth on 25th November.
Kishwer is the party's spokesperson shadowing the Ministry of Justice. She spoke inspiringly of Liberal Democrat successes in controlling important local authorities from Watford to the North of England and beyond, and working with Chris Huhne in Parliament to protect our civil liberties.
"Next year we will see a game-changing election. The pattern of politics afterwards could be quite different", she said.
"Vince Cable's strength on the economy is widely recognised but the Conservatives are compromised by links to wealthy donors, often with off-shore interests. They are weak on foreign policy, particularly by their silence and support for British involvement in Iraq - a war Liberal Democrats opposed."
"With Nick Clegg we have an energetic, intelligent Leader and a team of enormous talent and dynamism. We have every right to be both proud and optimistic. Let us go forward to win!"
Proposing a vote of thanks, South West Herts Parliamentary Candidate Christopher Townsend referred to campaigning in Kensington when Kishwer was the Chair of the local Liberal Democrats. Initially the hard work of those days in that unpromising territory produced only slow advances. But now the Liberal Democrats have won a council seat in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Christopher Townsend said, "If we can win elections in an area like that, then here in South West Herts where we are already at a good second place, a Parliamentary victory is within our sights.
The media are painting a false picture. The coming General Election is not a referendum on Cameron. Voters are smart enough to know they do have a choice. The Liberal Democrats are a credible alternative to the failed Labour government and here in South West Hertfordshire we will be campaigning hard to win!"
